Introduction

The Venugopalaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is located in Mugaiyur Village near Kalpakkam in the Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Venugopalaswamy, and the Goddess is Suntharavadivu.

Mugaiyur is notable for having 10 temples in total. Until 1985, the idol of Venugopalaswamy was mistaken by local fishermen and workers for an ordinary stone. Fishermen unknowingly began fishing in the area, while workers used the idol’s back for blowing coconut husks to make threads. The idol was in an inverted position, leaving locals unaware of its divinity until a curious individual lifted the stone and discovered it to be Lord Venugopalaswamy, also revered as Kallazhagar.

Uniquely, the idol depicts Kallazhagar seated on a horse, reminiscent of the portrayal seen in Madurai. Other notable temples in this small town include those dedicated to Vishnu Durgai, Vanchiamman, Muthumariamman, Muthalamman, Baraniamman, and Gangaiamman.
