Mount Abu Adhar Devi (Durga)
Introduction
The Arbuda Devi Temple, also known as the Adhar Devi Temple, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. Renowned for its rich architectural heritage, this ancient temple is located about three kilometers north of the main town of Mount Abu. To reach the temple, devotees must climb 365 stairs carved into the mountain, eventually entering the temple through a narrow opening into a cave, making it a unique spiritual and physical journey.
Puranic Significance:
According to legend, the name “Adhar” (meaning “support” or “hanging”) comes from the belief that the ‘Adhar’ or “support” of the Goddess once hung in mid-air at this location. Hence, the temple is named Adhar Devi Temple. Arbuda Devi is considered an incarnation of Katyayani Devi, one of the forms of Goddess Durga. This temple is a major pilgrimage destination, especially during the Navratri festival, when it attracts thousands of devotees.
Historians believe that the Parmar rulers, who ruled the region, trace their origins to Mount Abu from a legendary fire pit called Agnikund. As such, Arbuda Devi is considered the ancestral goddess of the Parmar Kshatriyas.
Near the temple lies the sacred well known as Dhoodh Baori, with water that resembles milk. This well is revered by locals, who consider it a manifestation of the celestial cow, Kamadhenu, believed to have divine powers. The well also serves as the primary source of water for the temple.
Special Features:
The Arbuda Devi Temple is believed to be over 1000 years old, constructed from a single massive rock, exemplifying the ancient rock-cut architecture of India. The inner sanctum is accessible by crawling through a narrow cave, adding to its mystical and ancient charm. This temple is one of the finest examples of rock-cut temples in the country.
The temple is particularly vibrant during the 9 days of Navratri, as it becomes a center of devotion and celebration, with countless pilgrims offering prayers to Goddess Durga.
