Introduction

Mogamparikuppam Ekambereswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Mogamparikuppam village, Virudhachalam circle, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. Mogamparikuppam is a small village; This Shiva temple is located in the north-east of the town. There is a large pond on the north side of the temple. Temples of the same size have been erected for both Ganesha and Shiva. Here the Lord is called as Ekambereswarar, also called as Mokambareswarar.

Puranic Significance

Here the Lord has an east facing temple; the Lord is in a medium-sized lingamurthi. Nandi is in front of the Lord. Adjacent to the sanctum sanctorum, the Vinayagar temple is also of this size. There is a large amount of Vinayagar in it. There is a tricycle in front of him. The temples in this area are mostly standalone Shiva temples without ambika. Thus these may be post-6th century and pre-10th century temple.

Moham means desire; Ambaram means clothes; He who wears clothes in a way that arouses is a prostitute. Who is this Mogappar? Eesan, who came to Tirumalai in the guise of Tirumala to bring good guidance to the family of those who did not worship the Lord, anointed himself with white water, carrying a footstool on his feet, holding a stick in his right hand, a rosary and alms in his left hand, eyes pouring out mercy in the form of four corners, a scepter that bewitches the beholder, and a staff with a born mane. He is called Mogappar. Seeing his behavior, the sages became enamored and left their husbands and followed him. The sages were mesmerized by Mohini’s beauty and became confused with desire. It is because of the name of this Lord that Mokambararukuppam became Mokambarikuppam. This Lingamurthy was also known as Kambareswarar, but the villagers called him as Ekamberswarar.
