Introduction
Mavattakudi Kailasanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Mavattakudi village, Mannargudi circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Mavattakudi is a very small town. There is a Perumal temple on the bank of one big pond and a Shiva temple on the bank of another big pond. Both the temple idols may be thousands of years old. Here the temple is west facing Shiva temple, the primary deity is called as Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Sivakamasundari.
Puranic Significance
The inscriptions, one fragment mentions the name of Tribhuvana chakravarttitri bhuvanaviradeva and another fragment mentions a temple work followed from the 33rd AD. Based on this, it can be said that the present temple belongs to the 12th-13th century.
Lord Kailasanathar, the newly built temple that has a sanctum facing the Lord towards the east. Ambigai is facing south. And a small nandi facing towards the lord. Tenmukan Durga is among the Lord sanctum. Vinayaka and Sundar subramani are present in Prakaram. Kalabhairava is in the northeast and Sun is in the south. The entire prakaram is covered and the temple looks like a huge covered mandapam.
