Introduction
- The Adi Varaha Temple in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, is among the oldest known temples dedicated to Lord Varaha, the boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
- The temple houses the self-manifested (Swayambhu) red-colored deity of Lal Varaha.
- Estimated to be over 1,500 years old, the temple is near the Dwarkadhish Temple, just 270 meters down the street.
Puranic Significance
- Varaha Avatar is the third incarnation in Vishnu’s Dashavatara, where Lord Vishnu, as a boar, rescued Bhudevi (Mother Earth) from the demon Hiranyaksha.
- Sage Kapila, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, originally manifested the deity in his mind and worshipped it during the Satya-Yuga.
- The deity passed through various hands:
- Indra, the king of Devas, worshipped it in Amaravati for millions of years.
- After defeating Indra, Ravana took the deity to Lanka.
- When Ravana was slain by Lord Rama, the deity was reclaimed by Rama’s brother Shatrughna and brought to Mathura after slaying Lavanasura, where it has been worshipped since.
