Introduction

  1. Location:
    • Located in Marudhampattinam Village, Thiruvarur Circle, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.
    • Situated 2 km to the east from the southeast corner of Tiruvarur.
    • The village is known for its natural beauty.
  2. Puranic Significance:
    • The temple is associated with the Pandavas during their exile. It is believed that during their time in exile, they performed worship at this temple and offered various items to Lord Abhimuktheeswarar.
    • The temple is linked with a special place called Indamaruthampattinam, where Bhima, one of the Pandavas, offered an abundant amount of offerings, creating a mountain of offerings, which was considered a significant event.
    • The temple’s holy soil is used for growing sprouts during festivals, symbolizing the blessings of Lord Abhimuktheeswarar.
  3. Beliefs:
    • Worshippers believe that Madurabashini Amman, the goddess in the temple, helps children who are unable to speak. It is said that praying here will help children speak clearly and sweetly.
    • Those interested in music or those undergoing musical training are believed to benefit from praying here, as the temple is said to enhance their musical abilities.
  4. Special Features:
    • The temple has a three-tiered Rajagopuram with a Mottai Gopuram (dome-like structure).
    • The presiding deity, Abhimuktheeswarar, is represented by a Periyalinga Murthy, and the Lord is facing east.
    • Madurabashini, the goddess, resides to the south of the Lord’s sanctum.
    • The temple is called Panjalingathalam due to the presence of five lingams, representing the offerings made by the five Pandavas.
    • The four corner lingams in the sanctum represent different aspects: Nriti, Agni, Easanyam, and Vayu.
    • There are shrines for Dakshinamurthy and Durga in the Karurai Kottam, as well as shrines for Vishwanath, Bhairav, and Sun in the temple precincts.
    • Vinayaka, Subramanya, and Mahalakshmi have separate shrines around the temple’s Prakaram.
    • The temple also features a well in the north-east corner, adding to its spiritual significance.
    • The temple is believed to be over 1500 years old.

    • Festivals related to the worship of Lord Shiva and the goddess Madurabashini Amman are celebrated with great devotion, especially during auspicious days related to the Pandavas’ exile and other temple-related rituals.
