Introduction
Madathupalayam Temple is located in the Tarapuram circle, Tiruppu District, Tamilnadu. Here the presiding deity is called as Valliamman. Tirupur district is about 5 km from Tarapuram circle. The goddess in this temple is also known as Kannimaramman. On the eastern border of the town, in a shed with a roof facing north, the temple is located.
Puranic Significance
Kavuṇṭarayyaṉ and his sister Valli’s mother lived eight generations ago. They lost their parents at an early age. They lived without getting married to avoid breaking up with each other. In this situation Valliyammal was bitten by a snake and died due to Lord Thiruvilaiyadal. At this point one day, in the dream of the Kavuṇṭarayyaṉ, the goddess appeared and for the good of the town and at the request, I was born as your sister by the order of that Easwaran; Had to die; We are buried as seven kanni’s in the shade of the Ichi tree in the forest. So set up a temple for me and worship me one day in the year. I will make this town prosperous. “That is my responsibility”. Immediately the Kavuṇṭarayyaṉ ran to the Forest. There, on the stone under the Ichi tree, there was a carapace dripping with milk. The Kavuṇṭarayyaṉ, who was amazed to see this, He ran into town and told the information. They built a temple at that place and started worshiping. The idols of the seven Kanni’s were consecrated and named Kannimaramman.
The Temple is believed to be 500 – 1000 years old. The majestic temple is located at the entrance of the town on the eastern border towards the north. Open space, inside the temple, the goddess and the accompanying deities are displayed in the shade of tree.
Beliefs
Devotees pray for child boon, prosperity and fearlessness. Devotees offer vastras and ornaments to Kannimatamman.
Festivals
In the month of February, on the day of Maha Shivaratri, Pongal festival is held for the Kanni Goddess.
