Introduction

Ghummatwalu Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Lavana Village in Khanpur Taluk in Mahisagar District of Gujarat, India. You can easily access this temple from Lunavada via buses, as it is well-connected along the Lunavada to Modasa route.

Puranic Significance

The original was built during 10th century CE. The temple suffered destruction and was in dilapidated condition. The temple was rebuilt with a reduced dimension in 18th century CE by Vakhat Singh Baavaji (1735 – 1757 CE), the king of Lunavada, a princely state of British India. The original temple was built in Maru Gurjara style of architecture.

Special Features

This temple is a significant part of the Kaleswari group of monuments. It is positioned between the Kaleshwari Temple and the Kund. Designated as one of the protected historical sites in Gujarat by the Archaeological Survey of India, the temple was restored to a reduced size within the original sanctum.

The present temple comprises a sanctum and a Mukha Mandapa. The Mukha Mandapa is supported by two pillars and two pilasters, characterized by octagonal bases, sixteen-sided middles, and circular tops. Inside the sanctum, there is a Shiva Linga alongside an image of Mahishasura Mardini. The sanctum’s roof is in the form of a dome. On the temple’s exterior walls, there are niches housing sculptures on three sides. It’s important to note that this temple is smaller in size compared to the other structures within the complex.
