Puranic Significance
During the reign of Raja Raja Chola, this place was given as Nandikesvaranallur, and some land in this place was donated for Amudupadi Puja for Narimanam Temple. The Temple is believed to be 1300 years old.
Girigujambal means the mountain and Gujam means the woman who has given birth. In Tamil it is known as Kunramamulaiyamman. It is the nature of the living beings of the world to take refuge in the Lord in times of danger and weakness. Abathsagayeswarar is the one who gives shelter in such a difficult situation.
The east-facing Shiva temple and the entrance are decorated with carvings. The Lord’s sanctum sanctorum is a choral style, and in front of it are an Arthamandapam and Kamamandapam. Ambika’s sanctum is towards the south in the mahamandapam compound. Adjacent to the Lord’s Arthamandapam is the Vinayagar shrine and the Valli/Theivanai sammedha murugan shrine. The Lord is a medium-sized lingamurthi. Outside this hall is Nandi in his own hall.
Karurai has Vinayaka with Bhutaganas on both sides, next is Thirumal with Devas on both sides in the south Mugan Kottam. In the north are Brahmins and Durga. The mandapam in the north-east has the sun god. There is a secondary school in the south-east side of the temple.
