Introduction

Shambu Lingeswara Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Kundgol Town in Kundgol Taluk in Dharwad District, in the Indian state of Karnataka. The Temple is located at about 500 metres from Kundgol Bus Stand.

Puranic Significance

The temple was originally built by the Kadambas and later completely reconstructed by the Chalukyas in the 11th century CE. Over time, it suffered destruction during Muslim invasions but was subsequently renovated during the 19th century CE.

This east-facing temple is constructed in the ekakutachala style and comprises three main sections: the sanctum, vestibule, and navaranga. The navaranga has entrances on its eastern, southern, and northern sides. One of the notable features of the temple is its navaranga, which is supported by 64 lathe-turned and polished pillars, showcasing intricate craftsmanship. Inside the sanctum, you will find the presiding deity, Lord Shambu Linga. The Bana Linga is pale brown in color, while the yoni part is made of black stone.

Flanking the sanctum, there are images of Goddess Parvathi and Lord Vinayaka. Additionally, an old Kannada inscription can be seen on the walls of the sanctum, which likely provides historical information about the temple. The exterior walls of the navaranga are adorned with miniature towers and sculptures depicting various gods and goddesses from the Hindu pantheon. This temple is a testament to the rich architectural and cultural heritage of the region.
