Puranic Significance
- Temple Origin: Believed to have been built 1300 years ago by the Pandavas during their exile.
- Story of Markandeya:
- The temple is closely linked with the tale of Markandeya, the son of Mrikandu Rishi and Marudmati, who was granted a short but virtuous life.
- On his destined day of death, Markandeya worshipped Shiva with such devotion that Shiva intervened when Yama, the god of death, came for him.
- In protecting Markandeya, Shiva defeated Yama and granted the boy eternal life, earning the title Kalantaka (“Ender of Death”).
- Shiva’s presence in this temple signifies liberation from the fear of death and blessings of moksha (spiritual liberation).
