Introduction
Kolumum Kottai Mariamman Temple is located in the town of Kolumum in Madathikulam district of Tirupur district. Mariamman in the womb is in Linga form. He is called Swayambu Mariamman.
Puranic Significance
It is said that King Kumana was ruling the region and he built this temple where Amman’s Kottai was, so he is called Kottai Mariamman. The Temple is believed to be 500 years old.
When a fisherman cast a net to catch fish in the Amaravati River near this temple, he got stuck in a linga-shaped stone. Leaving it on the shore, the fisherman threw the net again. Again the same stone was caught in the net. Again and again the fisherman cast the net, and the stone kept coming. He got scared and returned home. That night, Ambal, who appeared in his dream, said, “I am the one who gave you darshan in the form of a linga in the river.” The fisherman told this information to the people of the village. When all the people searched for the stone on the river bank, they did not find it. At one place, the stone was buried in the soil and came out like a small bump. They built a temple for Kottai Mariamman.
