Introduction

The Bhadra Maruti Temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is located in Khuldabad, near Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. Situated just four kilometers from the renowned Ellora Caves, this temple holds a unique and significant place in the spiritual landscape of the region. The idol of Hanuman in this temple is portrayed in a reclining or sleeping posture, which makes it one of the three known temples where Hanuman is depicted in this manner. The other two such temples are in Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh), on the banks of the Ganga, and in Jam Sawali (Madhya Pradesh).

Puranic Significance

  • The Reclining Hanuman: The portrayal of Lord Hanuman in a reclining posture in this temple is a rare and distinctive feature. This posture is known as Bhava-samadhi, a yogic state where one is deeply absorbed and in communion with the divine.
  • Legend of Bhadrasena: According to folklore, the area now known as Khuldabad was once called Bhadravati, and its ruler was a noble king named Bhadrasena. A devout follower of Lord Rama, King Bhadrasena used to sing devotional songs in praise of Lord Rama. One day, as he sang, Lord Hanuman descended into the town, enchanted by the king’s devotion. Without realizing it, Hanuman took the reclining posture, embodying the Bhava-samadhi. When the king finished his song, he was astounded to see Hanuman in this divine state. In his awe, King Bhadrasena requested Hanuman to remain in that position in the town and bless the devotees of both Lord Rama and Hanuman forever.
  • Popularity and Festivals: The temple attracts thousands of devotees, especially during auspicious occasions such as Hanuman Jayanti and Ram Navami. It is considered one of the prominent spiritual sites in the area, offering blessings and solace to the worshippers.

Age and Historical Significance
The Bhadra Maruti Temple is believed to be around 600 years old, adding a rich historical and spiritual dimension to the legend. Over the centuries, the temple has grown in significance, not only due to the miraculous reclining posture of Lord Hanuman but also because of the deep connection it shares with the divine history of Lord Rama’s devotees.
