Introduction

Sundareswarar Temple is a dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Kattur Village near Thiruvarur Town in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Sundareswarar and Mother is called as Abhirami. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns had a mention about this Temple. The Temple is having three tiered Rajagopuram. There is Vavval Nethi Mandapam in front of the sanctum.Vavval Nethi Mandapam”. This is a huge hall (in the shape of a tomb) having curved roofs but without any pillars in the middle. Another significance of this hall is that bats (Vavval in Tamil) cannot come and stay on the roof. This kind of architectural beauty is very rare to see. Sanctum is situated after this Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Sundareswarar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Lingam is housed in square Avudaiyar. Mother is called as Abhirami. She is housed in a separate shrine on left side of the sanctum. There are shrines for Subramanya, Vinayaga, Bhairavar and Suryan in the Temple premises. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sambandar.
