Introduction
Karisalpatti Kailasanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Karisalpatti village, Sivaganga district, Tamilnadu. Sivaganga is one of the revisions made by Mahesan to get Mangalya blessings. During the early Pandyan rule, it belonged to an inland division called Puramalai Nadu. The temple is now in a state of disrepair. The Karisalpatti is located at a distance of 8 km on the highway leading to Dwarankurichi Ponnamaravathi. The temple is located near the bus stand.
Puranic Significance
The Kailasanathar Temple was built facing south-east of the city. The inscription on the back walls of the Artha Mandapam mentions that Rajaraja Chola I (985-1014 AD) donated land for the temple and that Pandyanadu was then called Rajaraja Pandya Nadu. The temple was later expanded during the later Pandya rule.
Apart from these there are many inscriptions on the west and north walls of the sanctuary. Many of the inscriptions have been relocated as the temple has been repaired and rebuilt. Two ancient Nandi idols are found at the entrance of the temple to show that the temple was built in the 9th-10th century AD. Opposite is the Nandi Mandapam which at one point was ruined.
The hall is built behind the main entrance to the Ganesha shrine. Opposite the temple is a huge Tirtha pond. The main entrance is with a tower structure. The temple is built with art in the form of Mukha Mandapam, Maha Mandapam, Artha Mandapam and Karuvarai. The Mahamandapam houses the Natarajar Sanctuary. At the entrance of the Ardha Mandapa are the Dwara Palakars and the Anunnaki Ganesha.
