Introduction
Sri Muthu Mari Amman temple is famous temple located in Karaikudi town, Sivaganga District, and Tamil Nadu. Here the presiding deity is called as Sri Muthu Mari Amman. The temple stands at the centre of Karaikudi town.
Puranic Significance
In the year 1956 on November 8, a little girl, Lalitha came to this place from Meenakshipuram with small pox attack throughout her body. People found that every word from her tongue showed a divine and auspicious power. Many people mocked at her and the Tomato man was among them. He practically realized her divinity. The divine girl told them that she was Muthumari amman and would protect the residents if they raise a temple for her. She assured all peace and prosperity to all. Saying these words, she attained Mukthi. The temple came into being on 17th November, 1956.
Beliefs
People seek child boon and success in wedding alliance talks. This is the main prayer in the temple. Devotees wag the jumping Vel (Spear), carry milk and fire pots Mulaipari Madhukudam etc. and also offer tomatoes.
Special Features
That devotees from foreign countries throng the temple with their own prayers and prayer commitments during the festival is an added reputation to the temple.
A little girl asked a man who mocked at her to bring a tomato grown near a well in his backyard. The man replied that her imagination was foolish and there was none like that. But the little girl told him emphatically she was right and commanded him to bring the fruit. The man went to the backyard of his house and was stunned to know the girl was right. He brought the tomato to the girl and fell at her feet.
Festivals
Kappukatti Vizha begins on the last Tuesday of Tamil Masi Month – February-March and would last till first Tuesday of Panguni month covering March-April. Offering Pongal, Mulaipari, Karakam dance, carrying fire pots, milk pots and walking on the fire pit and such Mari Amman related events are grandly celebrated in the temple. Thousands execute their prayer commitments during the festivals. Besides local people, many from Malaysia, Singapore, UK and other countries visit the place, participate in the above events after a bath in Muthalamman temple spring and carry milk pots in a procession passing through Koppudai Amman street, chekkalai street, Muthupattinam and other streets and perform milk abishek to the presiding deity as if falling from a milk falls. After all the events as noted above, Amman would be dressed (Alankaras) in sandal. Great procession of Amman takes place finally.
