Introduction
- Kallumalai Sri Subramaniyar Temple is a prominent Murugan temple located in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia.
- It is dedicated to Lord Murugan (also known as Kartikeya, Skanda, Kumara, and Subrahmanya), the Hindu god of war, which is symbolically represented by the peacock enclosure found at the rear of the temple—considered his mount in Hindu mythology.
- The temple features a magnificent seven-tiered gopuram (entrance tower) standing 21 meters high, adorned with 528 colorful figurines.
- Inside, a spacious hallway supported by intricately designed pillars leads to the shrine housing the temple’s presiding deity, an image of Lord Murugan.
Puranic Significance
- According to legend, a stonemason named Marimuthu, who worked for Parit Munisami Udayar, heard a mysterious voice calling from a nearby mountain.
- Intrigued, he informed his boss, who initially dismissed it but later decided to investigate with his workers.
- Upon exploring the cave surrounded by darkness, they discovered an image of Thirumurugan in stone, leading to the construction of the Subramanian Temple in 1889 within the stone cave of Kunong Sera.
- Over time, the temple became a place of worship, with offerings during Thaipusam being transported from the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Sungaipari to Kallumalai.
- In 1926, a tragic incident occurred when a large rock collapsed, killing two priests, prompting the government to relocate the temple.
- The new temple was established on the original site, with renovations completed in 1932, culminating in a consecration ceremony.
- The temple expanded with the establishment of shrines for Ganesha and the Goddess, funded by donations from devotees.
- By 1970, further expansion was completed, including the installation of Ganesha statues and a beautifully carved entrance arch.
