Puranic Significance:

  • Origins in Skanda Purana:
    • Kalasa is linked to the divine wedding of Lord Shiva (Parameshwara) and Goddess Parvati held in Kasi.
    • The congregation caused an imbalance in the earth’s axis, prompting Lord Shiva to send Sage Agasthya south to restore balance.
  • Sage Agasthya’s Journey:
    • Agasthya was granted a boon by Shiva to witness the wedding ceremonies from wherever he halted.
    • At Kalasa, Sage Agasthya halted, and a Shiva Linga manifested from his Kalasha (pot).
    • He built a temple and enshrined the Linga, naming it Kalaseshwara.
  • Lingam: Housed in a silver mandapa within the temple.
