Introduction
The Kasi Viswanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in Kadapakkam Village, near Edaikazhinadu Town in Cheyyur Taluk, Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu.
- Presiding Deity: The primary deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, who is known as Kasi Viswanathar. The goddess in the temple is called Visalakshi.
- Location: The temple is situated approximately 1 kilometer from Kadapakkam Bus Stop and is well connected by road. It is located on the East Coast Road (ECR) that connects Chennai and Puducherry. Nearby towns include Thenpakkam, Cheyyur, Marakkanam, and Melmaruvathur.
- Age of the Temple: The Kasi Viswanathar Temple is believed to be around 500 years old, with a rich historical background.
- Potti Pathan Chathiram Manyam: Potti Pathan, the chief goldsmith of the mint in Alamparai fort during the rule of Nawab Dost Ali Khan, contributed significantly to the temple’s history. He built a choultry (rest house) for devotees traveling to Kasi (Varanasi) and provided food to pilgrims. He also purchased agricultural lands and dedicated the revenue from these lands to the maintenance of the choultry. These properties were known as Potti Pathan Chathiram Manyam. After his passing, his descendants continued to maintain the temple and choultry. In 1911 CE, Narasimha Achari, a descendant of Potti Pathan, officially registered the properties for the temple’s benefit. Unfortunately, some of these properties have been encroached upon by unauthorized individuals.
- Temple Complex: The main sanctum of the temple enshrines Lord Kasi Viswanathar in the form of a Lingam. There is also a Navagraha Shrine within the temple premises. In front of the temple, there is a significant temple tank. Additionally, a small temple dedicated to Lord Lakshmi Narasimha can be found next to the main temple.
