Introduction
Illupur Chidambareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Illupur village, Kilvellur Circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. IIlupur is a small village and this Shiva temple is in the middle of the town on the bank of a big pond. Presiding deity is called as Chidambareswarar and Mother is called as Sivagami. The main gate is towards the south although it faces east. Once inside it, opposite to it is Ambigai’s sanctum sanctorum towards the east. In the mandapam connecting the two sanctuaries of Lord Chitambareshwar and Goddess Sivagami, there are two Bhairavas and a female deity statue on one side.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. The shrines of Lord Ganesha and Murugan are side by side in the south-west. Nandi is housed in a separate hall outside the main hall. Behind him is an altar. In the northwest is the Mahalakshmi temple. In the front hall of the Lord, there is a sanni charan sanctum facing east and a Ganesha and Anjaneyar nearby, the temple is waiting for renovation. Adjacent to the Ambigai sanctum sanctorum is the Nataraja sanctum facing south and his sanctum sanctorum is in open air.
