Introduction

  • Sukreswar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located on Itakhuli Hill on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River in the Panbazar locality of Guwahati City, Kamrup District, Assam, India.

Puranic Significance

  • According to legend, Sage Sukra established his hermitage on Sukreswar hillock, where he meditated and worshipped Lord Shiva.
  • The Kalika Purana mentions that the hillock, known as Hastagiri, resembles the hump of an elephant.
  • The temple was constructed in 1744 CE by Ahom King Pramatta Singha (1744–1751), with additional donations made by his successor, King Rajeswar Singha (1751–69), in 1759.
  • Situated on Sukreswar or Itakhuli Hill, the temple offers a picturesque view of the Brahmaputra River, with steps leading from the temple complex to the riverbank.
  • The presiding deity, Sukreswar, is housed in the sanctum in the form of a Lingam, which is recognized as one of the largest Shiva Lingas in India.
  • While the sanctum is well-preserved, the adjacent Nat Mandir has been replaced with sheets of iron.
  • The temple complex also includes a Vishnu Temple.

  • Sukreswar Temple is renowned for housing the largest Lingam of Lord Shiva, a significant monument built by King Pramatta Singh of the Ahom dynasty.
  • The temple attracts devotees from across India and abroad, eager to glimpse this historic Shiva Lingam from the 18th century.
