Introduction

Gowriwakkam Panchamuga Hanuman Temple is located in Palaniyappanagar, Gowrivakkam on the Velachery road from Tambaram, Chennai. Gowrivakkam is a small locality near Tambaram in the outskirts of Chennai city in South India. Here the Presiding deity is called as Panchamukha Anjaneya. The temple has a three-tiered Rajagopuram.

Puranic Significance

The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Hanuman and He has five different faces and hence the name Panchamuga Anjaneyar. The five Heads of Lord Hanuman are the faces of 1) Lord Hanuman, 2) Garudan, 3) Hayagreevar, 4) Varahar and 5) Narasimhar. In other Panchamuga Anjaneya Temples Lord Narashimar and Hayagreevar faces can be seen in the back and on the top of the Idol but here all five faces are facing the front. This Temple also has a unique aspect since here Hanuman has ten hands and each hand has ten different weapons. There is a small Utsava Moorthy of Panjamuka Hanuman which can be seen inside the Sanctum Sanctorum. There are Sub Shrines for Lord Chakrathalwar and Lord Varasiddhi Vinayakar. Lord Rama is seen along with His Consort Seetha and Brother Lakshmana , There is a Utsava Moorthy of Lord Subramaniya along with His Consorts Valli and Devasena. Hanumath Jayanthi is celebrated in a grand manner. The Temple is believed to be 500 years old.

They pray here for forbidden affairs to happen, marriage and child birth.

Special Features

The utsav idol of Panchamukha Hanuman is also found in the sanctum.
A tiny sub-shrine of Chakrathalvar and Ram-Sita-Lakshman are found in this temple. There is another section of the temple where a shrine of Vara Siddhi Vinayaka is located. The utsav murtis of Subramanya-Valli-Devasena are also found in a separate sub-shrine.
