Introduction
The Jagannatha temple is the largest and most complete temple in Athagada Patna – also known as Athagarh site of Ganjam. The Jagannath Temple is situated at Athagada Patna in Ganjam. It is 9 km from Kavisuryanagar and 48 km away from Berhampur. Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and elder brother Balabhadra are being worshipped here. The temple was built by Raghunatha Harichandan, King of Athagada. Ratha Yatra is the main festival of this temple. The Place is attracting thousands of visitors and Pilgrimages for its Panoramic Picturesque as this temple.
Puranic Significance
The entrance is impressive, the majestic vimana rekha tower stands like a landmark with its elaborate artwork, and the pidha mandapa in front features reliefs of Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti legends. An Odiya kavya (poem) by Vasudeva Somayaji mentions the construction of this temple by Raghunatha Harichandan. Another corroborating inscription found on the nilachakra of this temple confirms that much of the temple was restored and rebuilt in the 18th-century within the Langalaveni fort here. Some of the artwork found here, however, confirms that the oldest artwork belongs to the 10th to 12th century period.
