Introduction

Veerabandeeswarar Temple is a sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in the Gujiliamparai taluk of the Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, India.

Location: The Veerabandeeswarar Temple is located on Tintakkal Hill, approximately 4 km to the east of Gudalur. It is situated 55 km from Dindigul on the way to Karur.
Historical Significance: The temple is believed to have a history spanning more than 1500 years. It is said that during the reign of “Pandyan Parangusan,” who ruled the Pandyan kingdom from 710 to 765 CE, the Veerbandeeswarar Temple was restored and became a place of worship.
Architecture: The temple is notable for its architectural features. The walls of the temple are constructed using stone, while the vimana (tower) is made of bricks. The vimana is hexagonal in shape, and a model map was carved before the temple’s construction.
Surrounding Shrines: Outside the main temple, there is a shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha and another to Dakshina Murthy Swami, who is facing south. Additionally, shrines of Lord Murugan and Sandeswarar can be found on the north side of the temple.
Unique Arrangement: One distinctive feature of this temple is the arrangement of deities. While it’s common for Lord Murugan to be placed on the left side and Lord Ganesha on the right side of the main deity (moolavar), in this temple, there is a unique arrangement with twin deities placed on the right side.
Main Deity: The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Veerbandeeswarar, and the idol is east-facing.
Sculptures: Outside the temple, there is a tall lamp pillar designed in the form of a flagpole on the eastern side. The base of the hill showcases large, unmaintained statues with intricate carvings, including depictions of Nandi, Ganesha, Pasupadeeswarar, and Murugan. These sculptures add to the temple’s artistic significance.
