Introduction
Devgarh Group of Temples are group of Temples is dedicated to the Lord Shiva and Goddess Sakthi located in Devgarh Village in Ambikapur Tehsil in Surguja District in the Indian state of Chattisgarh. The temple is located at about 14 Kms from Lakhanpur off the Bilaspur – Ambikapur highway.
Puranic Significance
The Shiva Temple might have been built during the 11th – 12th century CE and the Devi Temple might have been built during 12th – 13th century CE.
Special Features
Devgarh Village boasts two prominent temples, the Shiva Temple and the Devi Temple, along with numerous temple ruins scattered throughout the area. The Shiva Temple, although its current structure is relatively new, houses an ancient Ek Mukhi Shiva Linga with its base, known as yonipitha. Additionally, you can find statues of Nandi, Surya, Uma Maheshwara, and a Mukhalinga within the temple premises. This temple is also known as Chherika Deur. In close proximity, approximately 500 meters away, stands the Durga Temple. It comprises a sanctum, vestibule, and mandapa, although the mandapa’s ceiling and the sanctum’s superstructure are absent. Inside the mandapa, you’ll discover depictions of Lakulisa, Ganesha, Kartikeya, and the lower portion of Mahishasura Mardhini. A Nandi idol faces the sanctum. These temples and their ruins provide valuable insights into the region’s rich cultural and religious heritage, attracting history and architecture enthusiasts.
