Introduction

  • Location: Situated in Devanahalli Town, Bangalore Rural District, Karnataka, about 250 meters from Devanahalli Bommawara Gate Bus Stop.
  • Deity: Lord Vishnu (Venugopalaswamy).
  • Temple Age: Believed to be 1300 years old and a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
  • Architecture: Built in the Dravidian style and dating from the post-Vijayanagara empire period.

Puranic Significance:

  • Legend: The temple is associated with Ranabera Gowda who originally hailed from Kanchipuram. After a cyclone destroyed his settlement, he found seven vessels containing treasures and idols of Venugopala Swamy and Thimarayana Swami under a tree. He followed divine instructions to unearth and install the idols.
  • Construction of Temple: Ranabera Gowda, with the help of Deve Gowda (a local chieftain), constructed the temple and named the place Devanahalli, meaning “the abode of gods.”

Special Features:

  • Location: The temple is within the Devanahalli Fort and is the oldest temple in the town, also known as Devanapura.
  • Main Entrance: The temple features a three-tiered Rajagopuram (main entrance tower) with two idols of Lord Vishnu from the Ganga era.
  • Inner Structure: Includes:
    • Balipeedam (sacrificial altar),
    • Dhwaja Sthambam (flagpole),
    • Garuda Shrine facing the sanctum.
  • Sanctum Sanctorum: Composed of the sanctum, Antrala (vestibule), Maha Mandapa (grand hall), and Mukha Mandapa (front hall).
    • The Mukha Mandapa has intricately carved pillars, depicting scenes such as Hayagriva, dancing female figures, musicians, and kinnara (half-man, half-bird).
    • Sanctum houses the deity Venugopala Swamy in a standing posture.
  • Vimana: The tower over the sanctum is three-tiered.
  • Friezes: The outer walls are adorned with friezes depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Krishna Leela, including the entire Bala Kandam.

Festivals:

  • Chaitra Poornima: Celebrated with grandeur every April.
