Introduction
Mahadev Temple in Deobaloda is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.
Puranic Significance
This temple belongs to the Kalchuri Period (between 6th and 7th centuries).
Special Features
This east-facing temple, constructed from sandstone, consists of a Garbhagriha (inner sanctum) and a pillared Navaranga Mandapa (hall). However, the shikhara (the spire or tower atop the sanctum), which is typically built in the Nagara architectural style, is currently missing. Inside the Garbhagriha, there is a Shiva Linga measuring approximately 1.5 feet in height. This sacred Linga is accessed through a highly ornate entrance door, which is guarded by Shaiva Dwarpalas (guardians of the Shiva temple). Within the Garbhagriha, you can also find idols of Goddess Parvati, Ganesha, Hanuman, and other deities.
In front of the temple, there is a Nandi, the sacred bull and vehicle of Lord Shiva, placed as if guarding the temple. The nearby pond is called Kasara Talab, and it is associated with the belief that the sister (sister of Lord Shiva) carried the Kalasha (a pot) for water. This temple is recognized as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. During the festival of Mahashivratri, devotees from nearby villages gather here to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings, and the occasion is often accompanied by a small fair.
