Introduction

Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to the Lord Shiva located in Ghumarmund Para of Chitrakot Village in Lohandiguda Tehsil in Bastar District in the Indian state of Chattisgarh.

Puranic Significance

The Temple was built in 11th century CE by the kings of Chindaka Naga dynasty.

Special Features

The temple located in close proximity to the Chitrakot Waterfalls is another protected monument in Chhattisgarh designated as such by the Archaeological Survey of India. This east-facing temple, unfortunately, is now in a state of complete ruins.

The temple originally comprised a sanctum that enshrined a large Shiva Linga positioned on a square yoni (the base or pedestal). Regrettably, the sanctum itself has been lost to time, leaving only the pillars standing. To protect the Shiva Linga from exposure to rain and sunlight, a cement shed has been constructed over the sanctum, serving as a safeguard for this sacred symbol of Lord Shiva. Efforts to preserve such historical and religious sites are essential to maintain the cultural heritage of the region.
