Puranic Significance According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu once engaged in a dispute regarding who held the highest authority in the act of creation. In order to evaluate them, Lord Shiva penetrated the three realms by manifesting an everlasting pillar of light, known as the Agni Linga. Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma make a joint decision to embarkon a downward and upward journey, respectively, along the pillar, with the aim of discovering the source of the light. Brahma falsely claimed to have discovered the conclusion, while Vishnu accepted his own failure. Shiva manifested as a second beam of light and placed a curse on Brahma, prohibiting his participation in religious rituals, while ensuring that Vishnu would be revered perpetually. Lord Shiva made a vow that there would exist miniature Jyotirlingas. Inorder to find solace, followers will worship him at Jyotirlingas.
