Introduction
The Buniar Temple, located in the Jhelum Valley road at Buniar, is an ancient temple that dates back to the late medieval era. It is located in the Jhelum Valley road in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Architectural Significance: This temple is a unique structure as it is constructed with whitish granite stone. It is the only temple in the area that is made of this type of stone. Over time, due to age and neglect, the temple has fallen into a state of dilapidation.
The Buniar Temple has a double-chambered gateway that faces both sides of the structure, with lintels on the closed arches. The original deity in the temple, believed to be Lord Vishnu, has been replaced by a small Shivling. The stones used for the ceilings were known as Kanait, which is similar to Kanjur of Taxila.
Despite its current state, the Buniar Temple holds historical and architectural significance, as it reflects the cultural and religious heritage of the region. It’s one of the better-preserved examples of larger temples in Kashmir. The temple’s location in the scenic Jhelum Valley adds to its charm and historical importance.
