Introduction
Budalur Naganath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Budalur, Budalur circle, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. Budalur town is located in 7 km south of Thirukkattupalli. There are two Lord Shiva temples and one Perumal temple in this town. Naganath Temple is located near the Thirukkattu School in this town.There is a large pond in front of the temple towards the west side of the town.
Puranic Significance
Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord – Naganath, and Mother is called as Vishalakshi. The Lord is called Lord Naganath as he is worshiped by the Nagas. Even today, the Nagas in the pond can be seen and worshiping from time to time.
The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old, Chola period architecture. The Lord has a sanctuary towards the West and the Goddess towards the South side of the temple. Rahu – the temple to be worshiped by those afflicted with ketu doshas, those afflicted with snake doshas, and those with the sin of killing snakes. In the south-west is the Vinayagar sanctum and in the north-west is the Murugan sanctum. A connecting hall connects the two sanctuaries. In this hall there are Bhairava, Surya and Lingam. There is a small Nandi Mandapam outside it. Similarly, there is little Nandi against Ambikai. There are no navagrahas in this temple, because the lord himself removes navagraha doshas. There is a shrine for Sandesardani and a well in the south-east. The sanctum sanctorum and front hall are built of black stone. There are no Dakshan Murthys in Karurai Kothams. The temple is not protected due to its remote location. It has been years since the temple not many people have visited it because not much is known about this temple.
