Introduction

Bhoothamangalam temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Bhoothamangalam village, Koothanallur circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. A Buddhist monk named Buddhadatta who wrote Buddhist scriptures lived in Bhoothamangalam near Mannargudi. A Buddha temple built by Venudasara was here. Currently no Buddhist temple is found. The town has completely gone to other religions. The temple is situated at a bend in the road going northwards beyond the town. This Shiva temple is facing west side, here the Presiding deity is called as Bhoothanathar and mother is called as Bhootanayaki.

Puranic Significance

The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. The word ‘bhuta’ means happiness. ‘Boothi’ means wealth. Lord Shiva is also known as ‘Boothapati’ and ‘Bootha Nayagan’. The Lord is seated towards the West and the Goddess towards the South. The Lord is large in size as the great Lingamurti. In the Sanctum sanctorum there are Ganesha Thenmukhan Vishnu and Brahman Durga. There is a separate temple for Vinayaka. There is another goddess under a tree. Nearby is a broken Nandi.
