The Chakresvara Temple in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, is a notable shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.The Chakresvara Temple is situated at the end of the Hatiasuni lane, which branches off from Tankapani Road in the Rajarani colony of Bhubaneswar. It is located approximately 100 meters to the southwest of the famous Rajarani Temple.

Puranic Significance

Construction Period: The temple is believed to have been built during the 10th century CE by the Somavamshi Kings. This places it among the ancient temples of Bhubaneswar, showcasing the rich architectural and historical heritage of the region.
Orientation: The Chakresvara Temple faces east, following the traditional east-facing orientation of many Hindu temples. This orientation is symbolic in Hinduism, signifying the significance of facing the rising sun, which represents the divine light and source of life.
Architectural Style: The temple features a distinct architectural style, characterized by its pancharatha plan (having five projections) and triangabada elevation (having a pyramidal shape). This architectural design is typical of Odisha’s temple architecture, showcasing the craftsmanship of that era.
Structure: The temple comprises two main components: the rekha vimana (main sanctum) and a frontal porch. The vimana is square in plan, while the porch serves as an entrance and adds to the temple’s overall aesthetics.
Doorway Decorations: The doorjambs of the temple are adorned with intricate carvings, featuring three vertical bands of decorations. Dvarapalas (guardian figures) are positioned at the base of the doorjambs on either side. Above the doorjambs, the architrave is beautifully carved with niches containing depictions of the Navagrahas (nine planetary deities).
Deity: The presiding deity of the Chakresvara Temple is Lord Shiva, who is worshiped in the form of a Shiva Linga. The Linga is housed within a circular yonipitha, symbolizing the divine energy.
Lalatabimba: An interesting feature of the temple is the lalatabimba (arched space above the sanctum door). Typically, this space is occupied by the image of Gaja Lakshmi, a goddess associated with wealth and prosperity. However, in this temple, it is unique to find both Ganesha (Lord of Beginnings) and Saraswathi (Goddess of Knowledge and Learning) depicted in the lalatabimba, which is a departure from the usual iconography.
Exterior: Unlike some temples adorned with intricate external carvings, the exterior of the Chakresvara Temple is relatively plain, focusing on the simplicity and elegance of its architectural design.
Additional Images: In the southern side of the temple, visitors can find sculptures of Parvati (consort of Lord Shiva) and Kartikeya (Lord Shiva and Parvati’s son), along with an amlaka stone.
