Introduction

  • Location:
    • Situated on the eastern embankment of the Bindusara River, adjacent to the left side road leading from Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.
    • The temple is bordered by the Bindusagar Tank to the west.
  • Architecture:
    • Built in the late Kalingan style, dating back to the 15th century.
    • Constructed during the reign of the Gajapati rulers.

Puranic Significance

  • Mythological Background:
    • Lord Brahma came to Bhubaneswar to attend the coronation of Lingaraj Deva.
    • He was requested to stay forever but assured that he would return annually in the month of Chaitra for the Ashokashtami festival.
    • Lord Brahma promised to be the Sarathy (charioteer) of the Rukuna Rath of Shri Lingaraja.
    • In honor of this promise, a temple was constructed near Bindusagar.
  • Deity Representation:
    • The temple features a four-handed black chlorite image of Brahma:
      • Upper hands hold a Veda and a water vessel.
      • Lower hands display a rosary and abhaya mudra (gesture of protection).

Cultural Importance

  • A visit to Lingaraj Temple is considered incomplete without also visiting the Brahma Temple and the Ananta Vasudeva Temple.
  • Daily worship is conducted by Brahmins belonging to the Panda family.
