Special Features

The significance of this Vishnu temple is notable as it represents the only ancient Vishnu temple in the entire Bastar district. The Temple is situated near the confluence of rivers Indravati and Narangi. The Temple is one of the protected monuments in Chattisgarh declared by Archaeological Survey of India.

The transformation of this temple from a Shiva temple to one dedicated to Lord Vishnu, as indicated by archaeologists, adds an intriguing layer to its history. This east-facing temple is designed in a Saptha Ratha plan and stands on a substantial platform. Its imposing curvilinear sikhara is a notable architectural feature. Within the sanctum, there resides a black stone image of Lord Vishnu, depicted with four arms. An interesting detail is the image being canopied by a hooded snake, which reflects tribal influences. Additionally, an inscription dating back to 1110 CE, authored by Gund Mahadevi, the mother of Nagwanshi King Someswar, provides historical documentation about the temple’s past. The inscription discusses the grant of land to Lokeswar, shedding light on the temple’s significance and its connection to the region’s history.
