Introduction

This Temple is dedicated to the Lord Vishnu located in Barsur Town in Dantewada District in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The Temple is situated behind the Mama Bhanja Temple.

Puranic Significance

The temple you describe, situated in the northwestern corner of Singraj Talab, had fallen into complete ruins. Today, only a five-foot-tall idol of Lord Vishnu remains within the temple’s precincts. This unique location means that during the rainy season, the idol is submerged in water, while in the summer months, it lies exposed within the pond. Historically, it is believed that this temple dates back to the 11th century AD. The area’s name, Barsur, is thought to have originated from the word Balsuri, which later became known as Barsurgarh, marking its historical significance. Around the idol of Lord Vishnu, you can find scattered remains of the ancient temple, serving as a reminder of its once-grand stature. This temple’s location is along the Jagdalpur to Bhopalpatnam route, offering a glimpse into the rich historical and cultural heritage of the region.
