Introduction

Pedamma Gudi Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Durga located in Barsur Town in Dantewada District in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. Barsur is located on the banks of Indravati River.

Puranic Significance

The ancient Danteshwari Gudi in Barsur was originally known as Peddammagudi during the time of the Nagas. In Telugu, “Pedamma” refers to the elder mother. The temple has a rich history and was partially constructed by Annamdev, the founder of the Chalukya dynasty in Bastar. Annamdev initially established his Kuladevi (family deity) in Barsur before eventually moving it to Dantewada.

As previously mentioned, the name Barsur is believed to have its origins in the word “Balsuri,” which later evolved into “Barsurgarh,” signifying its historical prominence. Interestingly, inscriptions and coins associated with the Nala Dynasty Kings have been discovered in the Chhattisgarh and Dandakaranya regions, shedding light on the historical and cultural heritage of this area. These findings provide valuable insights into the region’s history and the dynasties that once ruled there.

Special Features

The temple you describe in Barsur has a unique tradition where the entry of women is forbidden. It has fallen into complete ruins over time, with only the backside of the sanctum remaining intact. Today, within the sanctum, there is an idol of Hanuman. However, local villagers refer to this deity as Pedamma, as the temple originally housed the idol of Pedamma, a form of Durga. Historically, the original idol of Pedamma was relocated to Dantewada during the rule of Annamdev. Unfortunately, the artistic eastern wall of the sanctum sanctorum has collapsed, but the remnants of this temple bear witness to its historical and cultural significance. The temple is located along the Jagdalpur to Bhopalpatnam route, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich and diverse heritage, traditions, and beliefs.
