Puranic Significance

The Surya Temple in Banjari village has a rich historical and architectural background. Here are some important details about the temple

Date of Construction: The temple is believed to have been built in the 13th century CE during the reign of the later Chandela Kings. This period is known for its significant contributions to temple architecture in the region.

Orientation: The temple is oriented towards the east, which is a common alignment for Hindu temples. It signifies the significance of the rising sun and its life-giving properties.

Architectural Components: The temple originally consisted of a sanctum and antrala (antechamber). It is also believed to have had a sabha mandapa (gathering hall). Unfortunately, the walls and roof of the sabha mandapa have been lost over time, with only the doorway remaining.

Lintel Carving: An image of Lord Ganesha is prominently carved on the lintel of the sanctum doorway. This carving indicates that the temple was originally dedicated to Lord Shiva. However, at a later period, an image of Lord Surya (the Sun God) was installed in place of the Shiva Linga, signifying a change in the temple’s deity.

Shikara: The shikara (tower) over the sanctum has suffered damage over the years, losing its architectural beauty.

Exterior Decorations: The exterior of the temple is adorned with various sculptures and carvings depicting gods and goddesses. These carvings showcase the rich religious and mythological traditions of the time.

The Surya Temple’s historical evolution, from its original dedication to Lord Shiva to its later dedication to Lord Surya, reflects the religious and cultural changes that took place over centuries. The temple’s architecture and carvings are valuable remnants of India’s rich heritage and artistic expressions.
