Introduction
Ramalingeshvara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Bailhongal Town in the Bailhongal Taluk of Belagavi District, in the Indian state of Karnataka.
Puranic Significance
The temple is believed to have been originally constructed by the Kadambas and subsequently underwent extensive renovations by the Chalukyas and Rattas. Within the temple premises, there are approximately two inscriptions that bear the names of chieftains from the Ratta Dynasty of Saundatti and Belgaum, and these inscriptions are dated to the year 1086 CE. These inscriptions provide valuable historical evidence of the temple’s association with these dynasties and the timeframe in which it underwent important modifications and renovations.
Special Features
The temple, affectionately known as Kalgudi, meaning “stone temple” in Kannada, is a prominent local landmark located outside the ruined fort wall and in close proximity to the Rani Chennamma tomb and memorial. This temple is east-facing and comprises a sanctum, antrala (vestibule), and ranga mandapa (assembly hall).
The ranga mandapa has entrances on its eastern, southern, and northern sides. While some parts of the walls of the ranga mandapa were lost over time, they were later reconstructed using modern construction materials. Inside the sanctum, the presiding deity is Ramalingeshvara, represented in the form of a Shiva Linga. In terms of architectural ornamentation, the exterior walls of the temple are unadorned and devoid of any decorative elements. Fortunately, the temple has suffered minimal damage and remains largely intact, serving as a significant historical and religious site.
