Introduction

Gu-yo-gyo-hpaya is a small Buddhist temple, 13th century temple located directly to the northeast of That-byin-nyu. The shrine is laid out in the form of a Greek cross with two renovated Buddha images—one large and one small—seated back-to-back against a common backrest. The central shrine is perfectly square, measuring 5.05 x 5.05 meters, while the outside dimensions of the temple are roughly 13 x 13 meters. The temple sits upon a much wider low brick plinth with one set of stairs facing east. Due to its proximity to That-byin-nyu, the temple is regularly maintained and whitewashed, though the whitewashing quickly weathers in the intense heat and humidity of the Bagan region.
