Introduction
Baga Monument 1588 (built c. 13th century), This unnamed stupa, designated Monument Number 1588, stands 250 meters NE of Thatbyinnyu temple, and almost directly opposite the Pitakat-Taik library. It is a solid core stupa with relented square plan about 20 meters on each side, covered with undecorated stucco, of which about 70% of the original material remained as of the mid-1990s. The only internal room is a small 1.83 x 1.82 meter shrine on the west side.
The temple was in a semi-ruined state until 1993 when it underwent repairs that included strengthening and whitewashing the exterior, and the addition of a spire and hti (gilded umbrella), presumably replacing one that was lost in the earthquake of 1975. Unfortunately, another earthquake hit in August 2016, toppling the repaired spire and damaging the bell-shaped dome. As of July 2017 the dome is undergoing repairs, though it is not certain if the spire is scheduled for reconstruction.
