Introduction

The Ayikudi Balasubramanya Swami Temple, situated in the village of Ayikudi, in the Tenkasi Taluk of the Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, is a place of religious significance.

Location and Significance:

The Ayikudi Balasubramanya Swami Temple is located on the banks of the Hanuman Nadi, near Kuttralam, which is famous for its waterfalls.
The name “Ayikudi” is derived from “Ariyar kudi” or “Arya Kuti,” which translates to “the abode of noble people.” The temple is popularly known as Ayikudi.

Historical Background:

Until 1947, this region was under the rule of the Travancore Kings. The temple has a history of renovation and development under their patronage.
Prior to 1931, the temple’s top was made of coconut and palm leaves. About 150 years ago, the Travancore Royal family took up the temple’s management and organized festivals.

Legends and Traditions:

The temple has connections to the epic Ramayana. According to legend, Hanuman was searching for Sita Devi and became thirsty. He used the sharp edge of his tail to create a small river, which became known as Hanuman Nadi. It is believed that Lord Rama also drank water from this river and rested on its banks.
Devotees believe that visiting and praying to Lord Balasubramanya at this temple will bring prosperity. The temple is particularly known for helping devotees attain Karya Siddhi (success in endeavors) and blessings for childbirth.

Deities and Offerings:

The main deity of the temple is Lord Balasubramanya Swami, also known as Rama Subramanya Swami. The Moolavar Moorthy is a beautiful small idol of Lord Murugan, with four hands.
The temple also houses an Utsava Moorthy named Muthukumaraswamy, who stands next to a peacock on a Padma Peetam.
Besides Lord Balasubramanya, the temple includes shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Goddess Ambikai, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Aditya (Surya).
Devotees offer special pujas and sponsor the offering of “Hanuman Nadi Padi-Payasam” to seek blessings.

Unique Architecture:

The temple’s architecture is unique, featuring a Kerala-style design, which is distinct from the traditional Tamil Nadu temple architecture. This architectural influence is due to the temple’s close proximity to Kerala.

Sacred Elements:

The temple boasts five sacred trees or “Sthala Vrikshams”: Arasa maram, Vembu maram (neem), Kariveppilai maram (curry leaf), Madhulai maram (pomegranate), and Maavilangu maram.
There is a river next to the temple, called Hanuman Nadi, which holds religious significance.

Festivals and Rituals:

Skanda Shashti Soora Samhara festival, Chithirai Vishu, Vaikasi Visakam, Masi Makam, and Thaipoosam are some of the special festivals celebrated at the temple.
Each day of the Utsavam, the Lord is adorned differently, and devotees participate in the festivities. The Lord is taken on a peacock as part of a procession around the temple.
Key forms of worship include Hanuman Nadi Padi Payasam, Palkudam (milk pots), and Kavadi offerings.
The temple is also famous for distributing Arasa Ilai Vibhuti Prasadam, which is holy ash folded in a pipal leaf.
