Introduction
Arcot Anandeeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Arcot town, Budalur circle, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. This Shiva temple is located in the village of Old Arcot is said to be one of the temples built by Kochengat chola. This special place was ruled by a king called Sendan and was an elephant base during the time of Sendan. The Shiva temple towards the east here was brilliantly illuminated. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord Anandeeswarar was facing east and Mother is called as Anandavalli was facing south side of the temple.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is believed to be more than 1500 years old. The Vishnu here is sitting in the position of holding the five dragon umbrella. The sanctum sanctorum, arthamandapam and mukhamandapam are chola temple with stone carvings and are built of vimanadu vithalam brick. This temple, which has many features, is completely dilapidated today and is in a state where people kneel under the thorn bushes. The villagers take idols of Vinayagar, Murugan, Lord Bhairava, Nandi and many murtis and maintain them in a shed nearby the temple.
