Introduction
Aravur, also known as Araiyur, is located on the Kumbakonam – Mannargudi road and is separated from Needamangalam by the road to Koradacheri. Small village wrapped in greenery. A beautiful Shiva temple located ten cents to the east. It was given as Aravur because of the worship of Aravur called Karkodagan. Currently called Araiyur. The canopy has been missing and crumbling for years. The Shiva temple faces east. There is an oblong pond in front of the temple. There is a gate on the east but the south gate is the main one. The aerial part is decorated with ebony and the air part is adorned with bricks and mortar. In the south-west there is a separate monastery of Ganesha and Murugan.Nandi also has a hall with a small tower. The sanctum sanctorum of the Lord with two ebony pillars. Lord Karkodakeswarar is towards the east and Goddess Mangalambika is towards the south. Outside the hall directly opposite the Lord is the small Nandi hall. Since the temple is privately owned, the labor and wealth of the forefathers are wasted today as it has not been maintained for many years. The temple is currently in a state of near-fear of whether the tree will support the building or the building will support the tree. “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K. Vijayan, these are extracted from his posts”.
Puranic Significance
The temple is small in size, this temple has three specialties as Murti, Talam and Theertham. Parikshat Maharaja, who ruled after Yudhisthira who ruled Astinapur, was destroyed by a snake. So his son Janamejayan then performed a time sacrifice and made all the snakes in the world fall into it and die. This is the place where Kargodakan made a theertham at this place to escape from it and repented and vowed to the Lord that he would never touch anyone again. No one has ever died in this town since then. It is only then that the Lord says that He will protect Naga Tosham and Rahu Ketu Tosham from those who come to this place and worship me. If those who killed the serpent once worshiped Lord Sthalam and repented for their deeds, his descendants would not be happy. Sundara Murthy swamis came to this place and worshiped Sodasa and received good deeds. The idols of Lord Perumal and Lord Hanuman were brought to this Shiva temple to destroy the Perumal temple in this town. The idols of Hanuman are brought to this Shiva temple. In the sanctum sanctorum, Ganesha, Tenmugan and Linkodpavar are on both sides of the Mahavishnu and Brahman are in handcuffs. Brahman and Durga in the north. Ganesha is with Lord Murugan Valli in the northwest at the shrine in the southwest There is a Homakulam in this town. There is a temple dedicated to the deity Pambuliamman, the boundary deity of Isan Dikil. It seems that the restoration may have been done three hundred years ago by the Maratha kings.
