Introduction

Itala Perumal is blessing on the tirukkolam facing east. The source plane is called the dwarf plane. He has been seen by Vedaviyasar and Brahma. Once the Vedas were stolen from Brahman by the demons Madhu and Kaidapan. Brahma prayed to Perumala to restore the Vedas. At the request of Brahman, Perumal destroyed the demons and restored the Vedas. It is in gratitude for this that Brahma is said to have repented towards Perumala at Italam. Here Arjuna is said to have hid his weapons in a pile of pearls falling from the Vanni tree and selling them in front of the Ithalat pillar.

Puranic Significance

In the Bharat War, Karna’s wheel was engraved on the ground. Karna gave it a shrug and thought of fighting again. At that time Arjuna was shot in the head and died. Thus killing Karna, who was unarmed, was not justified to Arjuna. Arjuna greatly regretted that this was a great sin according to the Dharma of war, and that it was something that people like him should not do. When the Pancha Pandavas once came to Kerala, they each renewed a Perumal platform and worshiped it. Legend has it that Arjuna renewed and worshiped Italam and hid his weapons in a Vanni tree near Italam. Since Karna was killed in battle contrary to the virtues of war, Arjuna repented at Ital for his peace of mind and to get rid of the sin of killing other lives in battle. It is said that Perumal, who enjoyed his meditation, appeared to him as Parthasarathy.

Beliefs

It is the belief of the people of the area that if children buy Vanni tree pods and throw them around their heads when they are not in good health, the disease will go away just like the enemies run by Arjuna’s arrow. Here, as in Guruvayur, Tulabaram is practiced. To fulfill their request, they are giving the hardwoods here in abundance.
