Introduction

Anakudi Somanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Anakudi village, Kilvelur circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. The small village has only two streets. The Shiva temple and the Perumal temple stand alone in the north-east of the town. There are large ponds in front and behind the east facing Shiva temple. There are many trees around the temple. A statue of Naga under a big tree.

Puranic Significance

The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old, is a beautiful Chola construction temple, but entirely of brick. The Lord is called Somanatha and the Mother is called as Somasundari. The Lord has a sanctum facing east and is a slightly larger linga murti. To his left is the Ambigai sanctum facing south. It is surprising that the mandapam is built as a big temple where the Lord worships. Behind it is an altar.

There are only Tenmukhan and Durgai as Karurai Kotam. Bhairava is situated in a separate sanctum in the north-east and towards the west. One’s birth sign is determined by the position of the moon in the horoscope. Thus worshiping the moon on full moon days and worshiping the places where he is worshiped will cure the moon dosha.

With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K. Vijayan, these are extracted from his posts”.
