Introduction

The Amruteshvara temple also spelt “Amrutesvara” or “Amruteshwara”, is located in the village of Amruthapura, 67 km north of Chikmagalur town in the Chikkamagaluru district of the Karnataka state, India. Located 110 km from Hassan and 50 km from Shimoga on NH 206, Amruthapura is known for the Amruteshvara temple .

Puranic Significance

The temple was built in 1196 C.E. by Amrutheshwara Dandanayaka under Hoysala King Veera Ballala II. The temple is a built according to Hoysala architecture with a wide open mantapa (hall).

Special Features

The temple features an original outer wall adorned with unique, evenly spaced circular carvings. It follows an ekakuta design, meaning it has a single vimana (shrine and tower). The temple also includes a closed mantapa (hall) that connects the sanctum to a larger open mantapa. While some of the sculptures within the temple are in a dilapidated condition, the temple’s architecture remains striking.

The shrine within the temple is square in shape and retains its original superstructure (shikhara), which is intricately decorated with sculptures of Kirtimukhas (demon faces) and miniature decorative towers (aedicules). Notably, the usual panel of Hindu deities that is often seen below the superstructure is absent in this temple. The mantapa boasts several deeply domed inner ceiling structures adorned with floral designs. On the outer parapet wall of the open mantapa, you’ll find a total of one hundred and forty panel sculptures depicting scenes from Hindu epics. Unlike many Hoysala temples where the panels are relatively small with miniature carvings, these panels are comparatively larger, allowing for more detailed depictions. It’s worth noting that Ruvari Mallitamma, a renowned sculptor and architect, is believed to have started his career at this temple, working on the domed ceilings in the main mantapa. His contributions have added to the temple’s artistic and historical significance.
