Introduction

  Alivalam Bhoominath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Alivalam village, Thiruvarur taluk, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. There is a big pond in front of the temple towards the east. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord – Bhoominathar and Mother is called as Aramkathanayaki. The temple is built of black stone during the Chola period, and the roof called prastram is made of black stone. The Temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old.

Puranic Significance 

The main temple of Lord has an eight hundred year old front hall. There is a big Lord Ganesha on the left outside the entrance hall. Opposite is the Nandi mandapam. Ambikai has a temple towards the south. Tenmugan is the only one among them. Prakara temples have Vinayagar in the south and Murugan in the north. There is also a gate in the western direction of the wall of the temple. There is a well opposite to the Durga sanctum in the north side. In the north-east is Navagraga bairavar.

An ancient Bhairava is also enshrined inside the temple. There are some nagars and a Nandi under a small tree outside the temple. These are the remains of this ancient temple.
