Introduction

The Sangameshwara Temple in Alampur, Telangana, is a significant and historically rich temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is also known as Kudavelly Sangameshwara Temple due to its association with the confluence (sangam) of the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers.

Puranic Significance

The name “Sangameshwara” is derived from the word “Sangam,” which means confluence. The temple’s original location was near the Kudavelly village at the confluence of the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers.

  1. The Sangameshwara Temple is believed to have been constructed by Pulikesi I, who reigned from 540 CE to 566 CE. It is considered to be a precursor to the Navabrahma Temples, which are a group of nine Shiva temples located in the region.
  2. Architecture: The temple is constructed in the Nagara architectural style, characterized by its east-facing orientation, elevated platform, and fortified wall surrounding the temple. The temple consists of a Gudha Mandapa, Antarala, and Sanctum with an ambulatory. A circumbulatory path is available around the sanctum for devotees to perform pradakshinas.
  3. Sculptures and Carvings: The temple features various sculptures and carvings, including images of Lord Vishnu, Kumaraswamy, celestial couples, Ardhanareeswarar, Ganesha, Shiva in various forms, and a unique depiction of Lord Hanuman with a Trishula at the tail end.
  4. Linga and Marakata Linga: The sanctum houses a short square Linga pita. During the temple’s relocation, a Marakata Linga was found beneath the main Shivalinga.
  5. Nandi Mantapa: There is a Nandi Mantapa (a pavilion for the sacred bull Nandi, Lord Shiva’s mount) and a Stambha (pillar) situated opposite the temple entrance.
  6. Lord Venkateswara Shrine: Adjacent to the main entrance, there is a small shrine dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, carved out of black granite. The idol is surrounded by depictions of Dashavatara and is flanked by consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi.
