Introduction

• Location:
  • Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped as Jwala Narasimha, this temple is one of the Nine Narasimha Temples in Ahobilam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • It is located on the Achalachaya Meru hill, near the Ugra Stambha, at the base of which flows the Bhavanashini River.

Puranic Significance

• Historical Importance:
  • The temple is believed to be over 1500 years old.
  • It is situated a few steps away from the Malola Narasimha Temple, and devotees can reach it via a trek or by walking along the Bhavanashini River from the Krodha Narasimha Temple.
  • To reach the temple, one must cross a waterfall formed by the Bhavanashini River, adding to the pilgrimage’s adventurous nature.
• Connection to Narasimha Avatar:
  • The temple marks the exact spot where Lord Narasimha killed the demon king Hiranyakashipu, making it a place of immense spiritual significance.
  • At this location, Lord Narasimha’s anger peaked, signifying the culmination of his Ugra (fierce) form.
• Deity’s Iconography:
  • The deity of Jwala Narasimha depicts the moment of annihilation as Lord Narasimha tears apart Hiranyakashipu with his powerful nails.
  • Other manifestations of the Lord, including Sthanu Narasimha (emerging from the pillar) and Veera Narasimha (in combat with Hiranyakashipu), are also seen.
• Rakta Kunda:
  • Near the temple lies Rakta Kunda, a small pond where Lord Narasimha is believed to have washed his blood-stained hands after slaying Hiranyakashipu.
  • The water turned red, and even today, red stains can be seen around the pond. Despite this, the water remains crystal clear and sweet.

Beliefs and Devotional Practices

• Lighting Lamps:
  • Devotees consider lighting ghee lamps at the temple during the Karthika month to be highly auspicious, invoking the Lord’s blessings.

1. Unique Idol:
   • The idol of Jwala Narasimha is depicted with eight arms:
     • Two arms holding Hiranyakashipu’s head and legs on his lap.
     • Two arms tearing open the demon.
     • Two arms extracting the intestines of the demon and wearing them as a garland.
     • The remaining two arms holding the Sankhu (conch) and Chakram (discus).
2. Surroundings:
   • The temple’s location amidst waterfalls, hills, and rivers adds to its divine and natural beauty, attracting both pilgrims and nature enthusiasts.

  • Morning Abhishekam and evening Gramotsavam are performed regularly.
